ESG Energy is unique in that it has brought together scientists, engineers and analysts who have worked for the Department of Energy and in the sustainable development, environmental health & safety and indoor environmental quality specialties for many years. ESG Energy's qualifications includes two mechanical engineers, six BPI-Certified Building Analysts, three RESNET HERS Raters, RESNET Trainers in both HERS and WaterSense programs, and three NAHB Green Verifiers on staff. The award-winning firm is an EPA-licensed WaterSense provider and RESNET-certified rating provider.

Craig Whittaker, President Show/Hide Craig's Biography

Craig has extensive experience in environmental health and safety, reinforced by roles as a technology practitioner, entrepreneur and academic. Prior to co-founding ESG Energy in 2009, he founded and held executive positions at Managed Information Solutions (internet technology and software development) and the Whittaker Group (environmental and health products marketing). He founded Environmental Solutions Group in 2002 to provide environmental health and safety consulting to the underserved residential and small business markets.
Dr. Whittaker has earned undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees, and attended law school at UNC-Chapel Hill. He currently serves on the executive committee for the Triad Green Building Council and the Guilford County Workforce Development Board. Earlier in his career, Craig held faculty appointments at McNeese State University and UNC-Greensboro. More recently, he held an adjunct appointment in interdisciplinary studies at Guilford College, where he taught history, writing, environmental studies, religious studies and music.
Dr. Whittaker holds professional certifications as a BPI-Certified Building Analyst (#5025524), Council-certified Indoor Environmentalist (#0608030), certified Healthy Homes Specialist (#9004391), and is a member of the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute and the American Academy of Environmental Medicine. John Chapman, CFO and Vice President of Finance Show/Hide John's Biography

John serves as CFO and Vice President of finance for ESG Energy. He brings 26 years of experience leading start-ups and established international companies in the steel and tool manufacturing industries. John has a strong background in finance and accounting, and a passion for creating vision, setting strategic direction, and mapping out product development and deployment. John has completed training in carbon accounting and is committed to helping organizations become better prepared for a sustainable future.
John has served on the board of directors of several non-profit organizations and coaches youth baseball. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoys running and mountain biking.

Steven Armstrong, Senior Energy Analyst and Vice President of Operations Show/Hide Steven's Biography

Steven is a senior energy analyst who serves as Vice President of operations for ESG Energy. Steven is a HERS Rater, RESNET Quality Assurance Designee/Trainer, WaterSense certifier and Green Build Verifier. Steve joined ESG in 2005, bringing over 20 years of professional experience in the fields of water management, energy analysis and environmental science. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in hydrogeology, geology and geochemistry, and has worked for the Department of Energy in addition to a myriad of state, local, federal, tribal governments and universities. Nearly all these positions have had a focus on the handling of contaminants within the environment and the potential risk they pose to human health.
Steve has a very strong background in both the residential and commercial construction industry. This knowledge base provides ESG Energy with a more thorough understanding of construction methods and issues facing contractors as they transition to developing and building sustainable structures. Steve also has extensive experience in sample collection procedure and protocol, as well as analytical methodologies and data interpretation.
Steve is certified by the Building Performance Institute as a Building Analyst and Building Envelope professional, by RESNET as a HERS Rater, by the EPA as a WaterSense inspector and by the National Association of Home Builders as a Green Build Verifier. Samantha Paulin, Client Energy Manager Show/Hide Samantha's Biography

Samantha serves as a Client Energy Manager with ESG Energy. Her responsibilities include negotiating utility rate schedules, identifying tax exemptions, utility bill auditing, and serving as the point of contact for UtiliStream clients.
Samantha worked on the Climate Change Risk Mitigation Project at the University of Cambridge in the U.K. prior to joining ESG Energy. She holds a B.S. in environmental studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she studied materials management and energy policy. Samantha has a strong interest in optimizing use of natural resources to bolster economic vitality and social equity.

Steve Batts, Energy Analyst Show/Hide Steve B's Biography

Steve serves as a HERS Rater and NAHB Green Build Verifier with ESG Energy. Steve has built energy efficient homes and additions for ten years and has completed classes in green and sustainable building practices from Advanced Energy and the Energy Efficient Building Association.
Steve is active in the Greensboro Builders Association, Triad Green Building Council, the Remodeler Council, and is a member of the Greensboro Solar Club. Jeff Stallings, Mechanical Systems Analyst Show/Hide Jeff's Biography

Jeff brings over 30 years of experience in life cycle cost analysis, commercial building audits and mechanical systems design/build to ESG Energy. With a specialty in energy efficient design and indoor air quality, Jeff has designed, implemented and managed everything from simple ventilation equipment on up to extremely complex and 'green' mechanical systems in large commercial, church and industrial buildings.
Jeff has served as an instructor of continuing education courses in Energy Saving HVAC Design and Commercial and Industrial Ventilation Methods at North Carolina State University. He worked as an engineer at AC Corporation and RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company prior to purchasing Gwyn Electric, Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Company in 2002.

Brad Fletcher, Energy Analyst and Training Coordinator Show/Hide Brad's Biography

Brad serves as a Home Energy Rater, NAHB Green Build Verifier, and BPI-Certified Building Analyst. With a Bachelor of Science degree from Montreat College in Environmental Studies, Brad has a passion for the environment and an altruistic enthusiasm to create sustainable homes for people in our community. Since joining ESG Energy, Brad has certified over 600 residential properties under the EPA's ENERGY STAR Homes Program and has spearheaded the development of ESG's Education Center.
Brad's knowledge and experience stems from a lineage of three generations of new homebuilders, which allows him the competence to comfortably operate within the building community.
In his spare time, Brad enjoys exploring the outdoors, playing disc golf, or gardening with his wife, Anne.

Michael Guy, Senior Energy Analyst Show/Hide Michael's Biography

Michael Guy brings over 29 years of experience as an energy professional to ESG Energy. He began his career with Carolina Power and Light Company (presently Progress Energy) in 1982 after completing military service and earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. During his career, Michael has focused on the energy efficiency marketplace and holds QAD/Trainer qualification with RESNET (Residential Energy Network). He also holds certification through the Building Performance Institute as a Building Analyst Professional, Envelope Professional and Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Professional.
Michael is currently a qualifier in North Carolina for the H-1 and H-2 Mechanical Contractor License, Limited Electrical License and Limited General Contracting License. He resides in Asheboro with his wife of 34 years and enjoys the outdoors of North Carolina, riding his motorcycle and playing with his two grandsons.

Walt Schnabel, Building Analyst Show/Hide Walt's Biography

Walt is an environmental investigator with ESG. Walt has more than fifteen years of experience with both residential construction and the property management industry. A BPI-Certified Building Analyst Professional, Walt has a special interest in sustainable building practices. He serves on committees and volunteers in the community with groups seeking input on eco-friendly building and development.
Mr. Schnabel recently collaborated with a team of consultants to research, market and launch an environmentally conscious, mixed-use development that will feature green building and energy efficient homes along with incorporating sustainable living practices. While living in Asheville, NC, Walt successfully developed and launched a property management firm for long-distance property owners.
Walt holds a degree in Urban Studies from DePaul University and is a Certified Residential Mold Inspector (CRMI). Walt and his wife Kathryn choose to live near downtown Greensboro with their trusty dog, Elsa May. E-mail Walt Schnabel

Anna Pinks, Administrative Services Manager Show/Hide Anna's Biography

Anna is originally from Asheville, NC and graduated from Guilford College in 2007. Prior to joining ESG, she gained management experience in the academic and retail sectors. At ESG Energy, Anna serves as a sustainability consultant and administrative services manager for the energy and environmental teams.
Besides working with energy clients, Anna links ESG Energy with both local and national non-profits and sustainability initiatives. She has completed coursework offered through the Natural Step, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to sustainable practices in business and society. Anna volunteers with Sustainable Greensboro, part of Sustainable North Carolina, and has been key to ESG's attaining certification as a GreenPlus organization. Anna recently began working on a master's degree in library science at UNC-Greensboro.

Dan Whittaker, Field Assistant Show/Hide Dan's Biography

Dan serves as a field assistant and duct tightness technician with ESG Energy. He began working in the environmental industry in 2006 and joined ESG in 2008, where he assists with energy audits, green building verification and conducts air quality assessments.
Dan has a strong interest in unusual weather conditions and has completed training as a Skywarn Certified Storm Spotter. His storm videos and photography have been featured on CNN, the Discovery Channel, Fox News, NatGeo and several local news media. While not working at ESG Energy or chasing storms, Dan is studying at UNC-Greensboro.
In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time outdoors and has completed three trips to Tornado Alley in the midwest with the NC Storm Squad, a group he founded in 2010. E-mail Dan Whittaker

Katie Kennedy, Intern Show/Hide Katie's Biography

Katie joined ESG Energy in May 2012 as a summer intern through the Small Business and Technology Development Center at UNC-Greensboro. A 2nd-year MBA student at UNCG, Katie has worked as a gemologist, jewelry grader and in retail jewelry sales.
Katie holds a degree in art history from Wake Forest University and expects to earn her MBA in May of 2013.
